The Ripper

This 4-part series explores the impact of the brutal murder of thirteen women and the attacks on seven, over 5 years by England’s most notorious serial killer – The Yorkshire Ripper. Examining how it affected the victims’ families, the survivors and the police and press pulled into the investigation, it’s focus is not on the killer, but on the country’s response to his actions and what this says about society and its attitudes in 1970s Britain.

Why I made ‘The Ripper’, the story behind the documentary.

“From its opening moments it emphasises the why of the investigation, instead of the how, and that makes The Ripper one of the most gripping true crime docuseries… Misogyny is a well-known facet of the Yorkshire Ripper case, but in this series, it frames the narrative, and the result is striking.”

“The series differs from usual documentaries on serial killers, in that contrary to what its title suggests, the docuseries is interested in the women who were murdered and attacked, and how their deaths affected the whole country.”

“These documentaries may feel like ancient history to some, but not to friends and families of the victims. And they will resonate with thousands of women who report a rape every year, only to be told their accounts are not good enough for a prosecution. Women weren’t believed in the 1970s and they’re still not believed today.”
